At Fixcarnow in Century City, we recommend that our customers have their vehicle’s timing belt replaced approximately every 50,000 to 70,000 miles, according to individual automobile manufacturer recommendations. Routinely replacing the timing belt is the best way to ensure you never suffer an inconvenient breakdown and require costly engine repair or replacement, yet it seems to be one of the routine maintenance tasks many vehicle owners don’t think about until it’s too late.
Our Fixcarnow ASE-certified mechanics inspect the condition of our customer’s timing belts every time they change the vehicle’s oil. This is one important part of the complete inspection we provide with every oil change. Replacing your timing belt according to your vehicle’s manufacturer recommendations and having your timing belt inspected every time your engine oil is changed are two of the best deterrents from engine failure.
The timing belt plays perhaps the most crucial role in making your engine run. The timing belt connects the crankshaft to the camshaft, which then controls the opening and closing of the engine’s valves. This is what makes your vehicle ‘go.’ Depending upon your vehicle’s valve configuration, you have one of two types of engines – interference or non-interference. In an interference engine, the valves and pistons are close together. They never touch unless your timing belt fails, and this is a catastrophic failure that equals complete engine failure. The repair would be engine replacement in some cases or the removal of the head and replacement of bent valves in others. Non-interference engines do not risk the contact of the valves and pistons if the timing belt goes.
One sign that you may need your timing belt replaced is a rattling noise from the front of the automobile’s engine. The timing belt is comprised of high-tensile fibers. Failure of the timing belt include stripped teeth or unraveling of the fiber cores, leading to degradation of the belt. While complete breakage is uncommon, the stripping and unraveling of the belt is enough to ruin performance. High temperatures degrade rubber, as does contact with engine oil. Water and antifreeze also affect the life of the timing belt. Hot and leaky engines therefore are a contributing factor to timing belt failure. Other parts of the engine may break and need replacement as well including the tensioner, and other great and idler bearings. Our technician may recommend replacing the tensioner if your timing belt breaks.
