Owners of high performance vehicles such as Mercedes are generally aware of the specifics in maintaining the health of their vehicle’s engine. Routine oil changes are one of the primary ways to maintain the functionality of the engine. Delays between oil changes can cause engine sluggishness, oil degradation and further problems such as burnt out rings, seals and bearings.
The recommendations for oil change intervals have changed in recent years. While changing oil every 3K to 5K was once the norm, different grades of oil and types of engines have caused some to recommend a 10K to 12K interval between changes. Our technicians will tell you that how and where you drive is the best indicator of how often you should have the oil changed in your Mercedes. Consistent city driving, particularly in the stop and go traffic pattern of Los Angeles would indicate that oil should be changed more often. High speed driving and cold starts also indicate a need for a more frequent oil change. Consistent highway driving might allow you to take oil to a higher mileage though is not necessarily recommended. You can’t damage your engine by changing your oil too frequently, but the reverse is not true.
The FSS (flexible service system) in the newer Mercedes will calculate in miles and time when engine oil need to be changed. The FSS calculates speed, engine and coolant temperature, load factor, RPM and engine oil temperature in recommending oil change necessity.
