This is an important difference when it comes to the brake system of the Mercedes for there are important differences in design. The brake rotor on a Mercedes is the disc-like component that is clamped by the brake caliper when the brakes are applied, in turn slowing the car. Thinning brake pads will run grooves into the rotors.
It’s important that you have your brake system inspected at the first sign of unusual noise. This could sound like constant squeaking, grinding or roaring or a pulsating rhythmic noise. While an occasional squeak can be the normal sound of dirt on the brake pads, a constant squeak can be the sign of the need for brake pad replacement or other repairs. A good test is to wash your brakes when you wash your Mercedes (which you should always do anyway). This will wash away dust, dirt and debris and should eliminate an occasional squeak. However, a consistent noise is indicative of need for a brake inspection and possibly repair.
Since the Mercedes has been designed to be light enough for speed, parts of the car are lighter than domestics. This includes the rotors, which are thin and not able to be ‘turned’ or ground once they suffer damage. We’ve heard reports of Mercedes needing new rotors as soon as 26,000 miles, so it’s definitely a repair you want to keep an eye on and avoid if you can so you can avoid the cost of rotor replacement. Some Mercedes will need rotors replaced with every brake pad change – which can be 30,000 for the front brakes and 60,000 for the rear brakes. This is due to what we call the German ‘soft rotor/harsh pad’ combo.
