As you know, oil changes are one of the most important preventative maintenance tasks you can do for your BMW. As oil ages it becomes thicker and loses viscosity: the ability to lubricate the important systems of your BMW. This is also called ‘oil breakdown.’ While oils are now designed to allow you to extend intervals between changes – this doesn’t change the fact that the oil is still picking up particulates that are then circulated throughout the engine. While some manufacturers are recommending intervals between oil changes to be as long as 15,000 miles, we do not recommend such a long interval. Dirt, dust and metals are picked up by the oil and distributed throughout the engine, causing early (and unnecessary) wear and tear. This wear and tear is entirely preventable by having your BMW’s oil changed at no more than 5000 miles.
